Story time programs are a great way to introduce children to books, libraries, and the joy of learning. The library offers programs for children of all ages. Programs are free and open to the public. Programs are designed for different age groups based on developmental stages, attention spans, and interests. However, we realize that all children are different and that parents know their children best and we do not exclude children from any program based on age. If you wish to bring a group of children to a program, please call the Children's Department to set up a time. If you wish to discuss a child's special needs that may require accomodation, please call the Children's Department (410-749-3612, ext. 25) at least one day before the program. Basic Story Time Tips
Laptime -- for children from birth to 23 months -- is a way to introduce our youngest patrons to the library. Parents or caregivers participate with the children in a short (approximately 20 minutes) program that features board books, simple finger plays, and music. Children build language and social skills while their parents explore new ways of learning with their children. It is best not to bring out toys or food during laptime. After the program, there is time to socialize with other parents and caregivers. Time for Two's -- two year olds are ready for more --- parents are encouraged to participate with the children in programs featuring picture books, music, and simple crafts. Children learn to listen to a story, build language skills, and play together. After the program, there is time to socialize. Three to Five's Story Time -- leads children to enjoy stories, books, and libraries as they build the skills they will need in school. Parents are encouraged to participate as well. Programs feature books, crafts, and music related to the stories. Read Along with Rosie -- evening program for children and families, featuring stories and music. The programs are focused on the older children (age 5-11), but all ages are welcome and families are encouraged to participate together. Our Volunteer Readers include education students from Salisbury University who offer story hours for pre-school and elementary school age children. These programs are free and open to the public. The library makes space available, but the programs are planned and conducted by the volunteers. Times and dates are posted on the online calendar and on library bulletin boards. Scouts and special groups -- the library is a great resource for working on merit badges or special group projects. Arrangements for groups are made as possible, depending on scheduling, staff, and space availability. Special program requests should be made by an adult, and any group must be accompanied by adult supervisors. Please call the children's department at 410-749-3612, ext. 25 for more information.
