Wicomico Public Libraries will be closing the Downtown Library on Monday, September 25th to allow for installation of new carpeting in the lobby area. The public is encouraged to visit the Centre or Pittsville Branch.

Volunteer Coordinator

Title: Volunteer Coordinator

Reports to: Program and Events Manager

Job Summary: The Volunteer Coordinator is responsible for recruiting, providing orientation and overseeing the volunteer corps at Wicomico Public Libraries.
They are also involved in assisting the Friends of the Library as a staff contact, attending their monthly meetings as needed and assisting with the operations of the semi-annual Friends Book Sale and the BookShelf book store.

Essential Functions:

• Recruits, provides orientation and evaluates volunteers for possible service to Wicomico Public Libraries.
• Coordinates with volunteer supervisors in each department for volunteer needs assessment and scheduling; provides support and guidance to volunteer supervisors.
• Works closely with the Friends of Wicomico Public Libraries to see that their volunteer corps is well organized, properly trained and hours recorded.
• Plans and implements appropriate recognition and appreciation events for all Library volunteers.
• Facilitates regular communication with the volunteers and Friends, library managers, volunteer supervisors and administration.
• Maintains and updates records and files reports as required.
• Develops and maintains partnership with outside volunteer providers (i.e. ShoreCan, scouting groups, etc.).
• Coordinates the Community Service program in cooperation with Adult Probation (court appointed community service).
• Perform other duties, tasks and special projects, as required.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

1. Two to four years of experience in a public or customer service position, most especially working as a supervisor of volunteers.
2. Ability to plan and implement training.
3. Excellent written and oral communication skills.
4. Strong interpersonal & organizational skills, ability to manage multiple projects.
5. Ability to meet deadlines and work with minimum direct supervision.

Education and Experience:

1. High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED).
2. Two to three years of experience in a public or customer service position or working as a supervisor of volunteers.
3. To perform this job successfully, an individual should have: Basic Word, Excel, Access, Internet and Email skills
4. Due to the need to supervise court appointed Community Service Workers, a criminal background check is required.
5. Due to the need to place volunteers in Children’s Services, child abuse clearances are required.

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to sit, talk and listen. Occasionally, the employee will need to stand, walk, and lift items

Work is conducted in a normal office setting which provides comfortable lighting, and climate. Occasional lifting, such as three to four reams of paper, four or five books, or other materials (up to 20 pounds) may be required.

Work environment involves everyday risks or discomforts which require normal safety precautions typical of such places as offices or meeting rooms, e.g. use of safe work place practices with office equipment, and/or avoidance of trips and falls, observance of fire regulations and traffic signals.
