BOOKMOBILE DETAILS

Wicomico County residents have enjoyed Bookmobile service since 1948. That year the Library purchased a Ford van at a cost of $3,000, with funds raised by the Junior Chamber of Commerce. It held 1,000 books and was in service 21-28 hours per week for eight years. The Bookmobile has come a long way over the past fifty years. The vehicle being retired today was purchased in 1991, and it is the fifth Bookmobile to serve Wicomico County residents. Today the Bookmobile serves 12 public and private schools, 32 day care centers, eight institutes and five Headstart and latchkey programs, and makes 18 community stops over a six-day a week schedule. Last fiscal year the Bookmobile circulated over 56,000 items, including VHS and DVD movies, music CDs and other audiovisual materials, in addition to books for all ages. The Bookmobile now provides online access to the library’s catalog, and customers may request and receive books and other materials from public libraries throughout the Lower Shore. The new, state-of-the art Bookmobile which we dedicate today incorporates safety, comfort, convenience, performance and appearance standards which hardly could be imagined in 1948. It is a worthy addition to a long line of successful Wicomico County Bookmobiles. What has not changed since 1948 is the County’s and the Library’s commitment to serving the entire Wicomico community, by bringing a special, personal brand of library service to people who might not receive it otherwise.
