See book jacket pictures and reviews right in the online library catalog -- Register for a library card online -- Pay library fines online -- Check out your own books at the new self check station -- Get easier access to books and other media from other libraries -- Get quick help from Spell Check.

These are just some of the new features added to local public library services through an Institute of Museum and Library Services grant. The Lower Shore Library Consortium includes Wicomico, Worcester, Somerset, and Dorchester County Public Libraries and the Eastern Shore Regional Library. The libraries share costs for catalog and circulation systems, and residents in any of these counties can use and borrow materials from any library in the system.

The new features have significantly improved online access to local library services. Now, from home, you can browse your library catalogs for books, audio books, music, magazines, and movies. For most items, you will be able to see the book jacket and read reviews. Improved search processes make it easier to find exactly what you are looking for. The help page for advanced searches shows you how to look just for the type of item you want. When you see something you like, place your request on line. You will get a notice when it is available and can pick it up at the library branch you choose. Have a list of items? Use the new book cart feature to request them with one step.

Residents without library cards can apply online. You will get a temporary registration number that provides access to online databases, and can pick up your card at the nearest branch when you come in with identification.

Library customers can use the “my account” feature to see what they have checked out, renew items online, and request email notice when new items on a selected topic or by an author are added to the collection. Can’t renew an item because of an outstanding fine? You can pay it online using your credit card. Online help on using these new features is available online for online fee payment, renewals, and preferred searches. You can also check your own account to see the expiration date and contact information and update your email address.

Hate standing in line to check out a book? New self check stations in most branches offer the option of checking yourself out.

During the past year, the Lower shore Library Consortium grew to include Dorchester County library. This expands the shared collection to over 500,000 items available for residents to use.

The new features mark the biggest change in library services in several years. They were selected and implemented in response to requests and suggestions from customers, and public reaction so far has been very positive. We welcome your feedback on the changes.
