It's Back To School Time

  Wicomico County Board of Education site provides a variety of information on the school system.  Some quick links are: school calendar  lunch menus bus schedules contact information for public schools in the county	Come in for BOOKS --  for school assignments, to learn on your own, or just for fun!   For those just getting started,  check out the beginning readers and early chapter books. The children's (or juv) collection at the library includes nearly 43,000 books.  Books on tape are available for children, too.  Listening to a good story can be a wonderful way to enjoy literature.  There are over 400 titles on the shelf in the children's department. And,  you can pick up videos -- movies for fun or academic support.  There are even some great ones for parents on getting kids organized for school. There are nearly 2000 video and DVD titles in the children's department.
  Maryland State Department of Education   -- lots of information, including: Voluntary State Curriculum -- defines what students should know and be able to do at each grade level pre-k through 8 in four content areas Maryland School Report Card provides information on school performance by county and by school Information on non-public schools	Come in for COMPUTERS --  The library has 30 public access computers in the main library, 10 at the Centre Branch, and 5 in the Willards and Bivalve Stations.  Children are welcome to use the internet for research, practice math and reading skills with computer games, or type up papers and projects.  At the library's Centre Branch, Bivalve Station, and Willards Station you can use a scanner and color printer to  create super projects.  (Computer use is free, but there is a charge for printing).
  before/afterschool care Maryland Child Care Resource network offers an online search for local child care providers. Your Community Link provides information on many afterschool programs.	Come in for ANSWERS --  Library staff want to help your children succeed in school.  Help is available for finding answers to questions, choosing books the kids will love, getting the materials to you, and using the computers -- in the library, in the branch, on the bookmobile, or online!

PLUS:

Homework Help -- online resources available from home with your library card.  Many of these are paid, subscription services available only through the library.

The Regional Resource Center for Families of Children with Special Needs is located in the library.  It has a wealth of information on working with IEP's, special education, medical concerns, learning differences, and finding the support needed.  Assistance is available from the Health Department if needed.

Teachers are welcome to use our assignment alert system so that we can have materials ready for major assignments.

The Bookmobile visits the Pittsville Elementary and Middle, West Side Primary,  West Side Intermediate, Glen Avenue, and Willards Primary Schools once every three weeks.  All students are encouraged to get a card and to take out books when the bookmobile comes.  Materials borrowed may be returned at the main library, the Centre Branch, or on the bookmobile. 

The Library is a partner in the STARS afterschool program which is operated by the Wicomico County Board of Education in 10 schools in the county.  Children in the program participate in a monthly library activity (story time, book talk, and activity) at the schools to encourage reading for enjoyment and awareness of library and other public services.
