Program Description

Event Details

Kids ages 6–11 are invited to become science explorers as we take a closer look at bird migration and the birds that live in our local and regional environments. Participants will learn how and why birds migrate, discover fascinating facts about different species, and explore how scientists study and track birds. Through hands-on activities, outdoor exploration, and group discussion, young investigators will build observation skills and learn how they can become citizen scientists in their own community.

Session 1 (March 15): Should I Stay or Should I Go Now?

  • Identify common local bird species
  • Learn why some birds migrate while others stay year-round
  • Compare survival strategies of seasonal migrants and permanent residents

Session 2 (April 26): Identifying Birds in Your Neighborhood

  • Go on a guided bird walk using a Birds of the Northeast ID card
  • Practice observing birds by sight and sound
  • Draw maps of our houses and neighborhoods to explore bird habitats

Session 3 (May 17): Amazing Adaptations

  • Discover the adaptations birds use to survive in different environments
  • Create a unique bird species using common art supplies
  • Watch the short film Wild Hope: Building for Birds
  • Discuss ways we can make our community more bird-safe
