November is the season for giving thanks, and we here at Wicomico Public Library have many reasons to be thankful. The future of the Paul S. Sarbanes Library at Schumaker Pond continues to take shape, thanks to the many generous donations that we have received from local community members. Today we want to highlight the $50,000 donation given by Gary and Tracy Desjardins.
The Desjardins have long been a key part of the Salisbury and Wicomico County communities, and Gary even received his degree from Salisbury University. Their donation will go toward creating more focused storytimes for children.
“The Wicomico Public Library has been near and dear to our hearts since the early to mid 90’s when we took our children to the library for outings,” the Desjardins said in a statement.
“They loved the experience of choosing their own books to borrow and returning them for new and different ones. This fostered an interest in reading as well as responsibility, knowing that they could borrow the books and were responsible to care for them and return them in a timely manner. Reading to them at home was endearing to us as a family and their interest in books as young adults is still alive today. We believe strongly in fostering an interest in books, reading, and creativity in children at early ages. For these reasons, we are honored to contribute to the Early Childhood Storytimes program at the new Wicomico Public Library."
We couldn’t be more grateful to the Desjardins, and we’re looking forward to continuing the proud library tradition of providing storytimes for young readers, laying the foundations for a lifetime of reading.
